Every junk car buyer in Austin works off the same general formula: scrap weight + parts value − tow cost − processing margin. The price difference between buyers is usually not "who will pay you more" — it is "who is honest about the formula and who is going to drop the price at pickup."

Here is the checklist we use, written from the buyer's side. Follow it and you will get a fair offer, faster.

Before you call

1. Find your title (or know what's wrong with it)

The single fastest way to lower your offer is showing up at pickup without paperwork. Before you call anyone, find your title. If it is lost, missing, or in someone else's name, read our title guide first. Most issues are solvable in 1 to 4 weeks with a county tax office trip — but they need to happen before the pickup, not after.

2. Get the VIN and rough mileage

The VIN is on the driver-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, or the title itself. Mileage within 10,000 is fine — you do not need to be exact.

3. Take 4 photos

You do not need a professional shoot. Four phone photos:

  • Exterior front 3/4 (shows hood, grille, one fender, one wheel)
  • Exterior rear 3/4 (shows trunk/tailgate, one quarter panel)
  • Interior (driver's seat, dash, steering wheel)
  • Under the hood if you can pop it

Text them to (443) 739-2733 or WhatsApp. A quote backed by photos is firm — the over-the-phone-only quote always has more room to drop at pickup.

4. Note what's missing or broken

The biggest deductions come from missing major components:

  • Catalytic converter ($100–$400 off if stolen)
  • Engine ($300–$800 off if removed or seized)
  • Transmission ($200–$500 off if removed or destroyed)
  • Wheels and tires ($50–$150 off if missing)
  • Battery ($30 off if missing)

Be upfront about all of these. We see them at pickup anyway; lying about it just wastes everyone's time.

During the call

5. Ask for the all-in number

The price we quote is the price you receive. Period. If a buyer says "$650 plus tow fees" or "$700 minus $150 for paperwork," walk away. Honest Austin operators quote you the cash you will hold in your hand after the truck leaves. Our free junk car towing is exactly that — free, no asterisk.

6. Ask how long the quote is good for

Most legitimate buyers will hold a quote for 7 to 14 days. If a buyer is pressuring you with "this offer is only valid for 2 hours," they are running a high-pressure sales script designed to skip the comparison shopping. We hold quotes for 14 days standard.

7. Get the company name and address

If they cannot give you a physical address you can visit, they are an aggregator (subcontracted broker) — not the actual buyer. Aggregators take a 15–25% cut and pass the car to whichever local buyer happens to bid lowest that week. Our address is 2305 Daisy Dr, Austin TX 78728 — see our contact page.

Before pickup

8. Remove your personal belongings

Check under the seats, in the glovebox, the trunk, the spare tire well, the sun visors, between/behind the seats. We find phones, wallets, prescriptions, and the occasional firearm in vehicles. We bring everything we find to the front, but better if you handle it yourself.

9. Remove the license plates

Texas does not require it, but the plates are tied to your driving record. Pop them off (two bolts each) and turn them in to the county tax office at your next errand, or just keep them.

10. Disconnect your toll tag

Forgot ones are the most common mistake. If you have a TxTag, remove it from the windshield. Otherwise your account keeps getting billed when the new owner drives through tolls (which will not be your car, but your TxTag).

11. Cancel insurance — after pickup, not before

We need the vehicle insured during transit. Cancel the policy the day after pickup, with the date of sale as the cancellation date. You may get a small refund from your insurer.

What does NOT help

These come up in advice articles online but waste your time:

  • Washing the car — does not change the offer
  • Vacuuming the interior — does not change the offer
  • Fixing minor issues — almost never economical. A $200 alternator fix to make the car start adds maybe $100 to the offer. You lose money.
  • Getting it inspected — irrelevant for scrap and parts
  • Bringing maintenance records — interesting for resale; useless for junk

The one mistake that always lowers the offer

Getting only one quote.

The Austin market has dozens of junk car buyers. Half are reputable; the other half are bottom-feeders running bait-and-switch scripts. Get 2 or 3 quotes. Compare the all-in number, the time-on-site, and the company's actual address. The right buyer is often not the highest quote — it is the highest honest quote.

If you call 3 buyers and we are not the highest, we will not bid against ourselves — but we will tell you honestly whether the other quote is realistic for your vehicle. We are not interested in winning by lying about a number we cannot deliver at pickup.
