Most "junk car value calculators" online are designed to capture your phone number, not to give you an honest number. We have been buying junk cars in Austin since 2010. Here is the actual range we are paying right now, what moves the offer up or down, and the questions we ask before quoting you.

The honest range for Austin in 2026

For a complete vehicle (not stripped, all major components present) we are paying these ranges this month:

  • Compact sedan, non-running, 2005–2015 — $200 to $550
  • Mid-size sedan, non-running, 2005–2015 — $300 to $650
  • Full-size sedan or wagon, non-running, 2005–2015 — $350 to $750
  • Compact SUV, non-running, 2005–2015 — $400 to $850
  • Full-size truck, non-running, 2005–2015 — $500 to $1,500
  • Newer vehicles (2016+) with body damage but running — $700 to $3,500+

These numbers shift week to week with scrap metal prices and used-parts demand. The bottom of each range usually applies when major components are missing (no engine, no transmission, no catalytic converter) or there is heavy flood or fire damage. The top of the range is for a complete, towed-to-our-lot vehicle after we have seen photos and confirmed condition.

The 5 factors that actually decide your offer

1. Catalytic converter — still the single biggest line item

Even with the federal anti-theft legislation in 2024 and stricter scrap regulations in Texas, the catalytic converter is still the most valuable single component on most junk cars. A complete original converter on a 2010 Toyota or Honda runs $80 to $400 depending on platinum, palladium, and rhodium content. If your cat has been stolen — common in East Riverside, North Lamar, and South Congress — expect $100 to $400 off the offer.

2. Engine and transmission — running or seized

A running 4-cylinder engine in a popular vehicle (Corolla, Civic, Sentra) is worth $300 to $800 as a pull. A seized engine is worth its scrap weight, roughly $40 to $80. We ask "does it start?" not because we will not buy it — we will, see free junk car towing — but because it changes the offer by several hundred dollars.

3. Body condition — clean, dented, or wrecked

Body panels (doors, hoods, fenders, tailgates) have real resale value if they are straight. A clean driver's door from a 2014 F-150 sells to a body shop for $150 to $300. The same door bent and creased is scrap, worth $5. If you have collision damage, see our wrecked car removal page for what we buy.

4. Wheels and tires

A set of factory alloy wheels in good shape brings $80 to $200. Steel wheels are scrap. Tires with usable tread (5/32 or better) are worth $10 to $25 each at a used-tire shop. We grade these at pickup and they are baked into the offer.

5. Make, model, year, and parts demand

Some platforms have a healthy used-parts market in central Texas. A 2008–2014 Honda Civic or 2007–2013 Toyota Camry has parts being pulled all day at every salvage yard in the region. A 2009 Suzuki XL7 has near-zero parts demand and is essentially scrap weight. We pay for what we can actually resell.

Real examples from this month

  • 2007 Honda Accord, non-running, complete, no body damage — Pflugerville pickup, $475
  • 2012 Ford F-150, running, hail damage, 180k miles — Round Rock pickup, $1,850
  • 2003 Chevy Tahoe, no engine, no transmission, missing cat — Austin pickup, $225
  • 2018 Hyundai Sonata, flood-damaged, no title — Cedar Park pickup, $700 (limited because no title)

For city-specific pickup logistics, see our Round Rock and Cedar Park pages.

Why offers vary day to day

Scrap steel pricing moves on commodity markets. When the Houston scrap yards we sell to are paying $180/ton for crushed cars, our offers reflect that. When they drop to $150/ton, we pay $50 to $100 less per vehicle on average. We update our quoting weekly based on what our scrap buyer pays us. The scrap metal pricing post walks through the math.

Used-parts demand also fluctuates. A wrecked 2018 Honda CR-V is worth more in January (insurance claims for cold-weather damage are common) than in mid-July. We do not gouge for this, but the offer reflects what we can recover.

How to get the most accurate number for your car

  1. Have the VIN ready — driver-side dash, lower windshield, or driver door jamb
  2. Know rough mileage — within 10k is fine
  3. Be honest about condition — engine status, body damage, missing parts, title status
  4. Send photos via WhatsApp — exterior, interior, under the hood if you can

We will get you a number in 5 minutes by phone or 30 minutes by text. We do not need your zip code, your email, your last four social — none of the standard data-harvesting moves you see on aggregator sites.
